The Hero Honda Achiever

The Hero Honda Achiever bears a striking resemblance to the Ambition model in terms of overall appearance. Other than the front fairing and the instrument cluster, everything else-- the tank, side panels, or the tailpiece --has been picked up verbatim from the Ambition.

If the styling cues have been taken from the Ambition, the power pack has been lifted from the Honda Unicorn. The two motors are almost identical, barring a minuscule 0.1bhp increase claimed for the Achiever over the older Unicorn's 13.3bhp at 8000rpm.

The Achiever is equipped with a four-stroke engine constructed of aluminium-alloy with an air-cooled, and twin-valve equipped motor of 149.1cc displacement. The bike uses the conventional suspension set-up of telescopic shock absorbers up front and rectangular swingarm with adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear.

For a 150cc bike, Achiever scores high on the mileage front. The Hero Honda Achiever delivers an impressive 51.3 kpl in real city conditions and 55.3kpl on the highway. Despite a gem of an engine and good riding quality, the Achiever somehow lacks the killer punch to stand out in a competitive market.

Hero Honda Super Splendor

Super splender

After a long hiatus, Hero Honda made a foray into the 125cc segment with the new Super Splendor. The new bike retains the hugely successful Splendor brand name so as to leverage its massive brand presence.

In contrast to the unconventional looks of its competitors, the Super Splendor preserves the unassuming and bland looks of the legendary Splendor. It sports a large, rectangular, crystal-lens-type headlamp along with a larger, more steeply angled bikini fairing and a tinted, translucent visor for improved lighting of the instrument cluster.

The Super Splendor comes with a new single-cylinder, four-stroke 124.7cc engine that generates a peak power of mere 9 bhp at a high 7,000 rpm. The Super Splendor's engine retains the same horizontal configuration of the original and its refinement comes through with the relatively vibration-free performance.

The suspension set-up in the Super Splendor comprises a telescopic, hydraulic fork at the front and a rectangular section swing arm with hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. The bike proves to be invaluable in the fuel economy stakes, with tall gear ratios, roller bearings for rocker arms and narrow tyres all working towards the best possible mileage.

Rules and Regulations for Importing Bikes in India

Rules and Regulations for Importing Bikes in India

Bike enthusiasts from different corners of India have been importing high-performance bikes to satiate their zeal for high-speed biking. Notwithstanding their astronomical price tags, these cult machines do have a fair number of admirers in India.

Post Dhoom, the Bollywood potboiler which featured John Abraham in a Suzuki Hayabusa, this small community of high-power bike aficionados is growing with every passing day. To import a brand new bike, one will have to pay 105 percent duty and 100 percent on a used one. The Exim Policy 2001 lifted quantitative restrictions on the import of second-hand vehicles.

The import of vehicles shall be subject to the following guidelines of the Government of India:

1. (I) A new imported vehicle shall mean a vehicle that: -

(a) has not been manufactured/assembled in India; and
(b) has not been sold, leased or loaned prior to importation into India; or
(c) has not been registered for use in any country according to the laws of that country, prior to importation into India.

(II) The import of new vehicles shall be subject to the following conditions:
(a) The new vehicle shall-
(i) have a speedometer indicating the speed in km / h;
(ii) have right hand steering, and controls (applicable on vehicles other than two and three wheelers);
(iii) have photometry of the headlamps to suit "keep-left" traffic; and
(iv) be imported from the country of manufacture.

(b) In addition, the new vehicle shall conform to the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the rules made thereunder, as applicable, on the date of import.

(c) The import of new vehicles shall be permitted only through the Customs port at Nhava Sheva (Mumbai), Calcutta and Chennai.

2. (I) A second hand or used vehicle shall mean a vehicle that :-

(a) has been sold, leased or loaned prior to importation into India; or
(b) has been registered for use in any country according to the laws of that country, prior to importation into India;

(II). The import of second had or used vehicles shall be subject to the following conditions:-
(a) The second hand or used vehicle shall not be older than three years from the date of manufacture;
(b) The second hand or used vehicle shall:

(i) have right hand steering, and controls (applicable on vehicles other than two and three wheelers);
(ii) have a speedometer indicating the speed km / h; and
(iii) have photometry of the headlamps to suit "keep left" traffic.

(c) In addition, the second hand or used vehicle shall conform to the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 and the rules made thereunder, as applicable, on the date of import.

(d) Import of second hand vehicles shall be allowed only through the customs port at Mumbai.

(e) The second hand or used vehicles imported into India should have a minimum roadworthiness for a period of 5 years from the date of importation into India with assurance for providing service facilities within the country during the five year period. For this purpose, the importer shall, at the time of importation, submit a declaration indicating the period of roadworthiness in respect of every individual vehicle being imported, supported by a certificate issued by any of the testing agencies, which the Central Government may notify in this regard.

(f) The vehicle has to be submitted for testing to Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), Ahmednagar, of the Ministry of Defence or the Automotive Research Association of India, Pune or the Central Farm and Machinery Training and Testing Institute, Budni, Madhya Pradesh, and such other agencies as may be specified by the Central Government, for granting a certificate by that agency as to the compliance of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and any rules made thereunder.

The Hero Honda Glamour-Fi

The Hero Honda Glamour-Fi is a trendsetter in Indian two-wheeler industry for its path breaking fuel-injection technology. Fuel-injection technology offers superior and consistent engine performance with improved drivability, lower emissions, enhanced fuel economy and extended engine life.

The PGM-FI feature (Programmed Fuel Injection) in Glamour-Fi is basically a computer controlled electronic fuel injection system that scans critical engine operating conditions through sensors and provides input to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to inject the accurate amount of fuel as per the requirement. Thus the new technology eliminates the need for a carburetor.

Apart from fuel-injection, the Glamour-Fi comes loaded with other features such as a Bank Angle Sensor and Malfunction Indicator Lamp. The sensor is an important safety feature that cuts off the fuel supply and ignition if the bike tips over while diagnoses any malfunction of sensors and indicates the same to the rider.

The Glamour-Fi comes with a four-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled engine that generates a displacement of 124.8cc. The bike features the standard suspension set-up of telescopic hydraulic fork at the front and a swing arm with hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear.
